Now that the school year has begun, the Annapolis Maritime Museum (AMM) needs kid-friendly, Bay-loving, history buffs for several volunteer opportunities:
History Detectives: an after school program at Eastport Elementary School in which students will become detectives looking for clues in historical documents and sites to decipher the history of their maritime community. Wednesdays (3 six-week sessions) 2:30-4:30 p.m.
Chesapeake Champions: an after-school program at Annapolis Elementary School in which students are "Caring, Conserving, and Campaigning for the Chesapeake" through hands-on activities with the Bay and its critters. Tuesdays (3 six-week sessions) 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Treasure Our Water: a field trip program in partnership with Watermark Cruises. Students explore the ecological and cultural history that has led to the decline of the Bay, including the importance of water and local marine life, the role of wetlands, and the natural history of the oyster. An hour-long boat ride is part of this program. Scheduled as needed, primarily mornings.
Eighth-grade education program committee: AMM has provided a day-long program for 8th graders at Bates Middle School for the last two years, but this program needs to be revised and expanded. Monthly meetings, time and dates to be determined by committee members.
