Here's the Skinny on EYC’s “Cotillion”
On June 12, the Spring Cotillion waltzes into the Eastport Yacht Club (EYC). It’s a block party to honor local marine workers who take care of skippers and their boats. During the mid-1970s, EYC’s future charter members were rowdy, fun-loving racers and boat maintenance workers. At that time, the Annapolis YC kicked off the racing season each year with an “exclusive gala” of gambling, blue blazers, and long gowns for those fortunate enough to own large, pricey racing yachts. Let’s just say the visiting captains and crews were not on the guest list. In response, a rebellious tradition of a casual outdoor party with local bands and “Loudmouth Soup” or “Victory Punch” was born to entertain local and visiting captains and crews and the local wizards of yacht prep. Always wanting to be helpful and quite fond of sidebars, SpinSheet sailed onto virtualbar.com to find out what makes a good Victory Punch. (Loudmouth Punch didn’t sit well with Google the day we tried.) We weeded past a few bothersome boxing references and some quite dangerous concoctions, such as one calling for an ounce each of brandy, 151 rum, tequila, and liqueur with a cinnamon garnish. (Oh my!) Here’s what we found: by mixing two quarts each white wine and club soda, 46 ounces pineapple juice, two fifths champagne, one fifth tequila, and some sliced strawberries and oranges, you’ve got a good shot at making 64 of your closest Cotillion buddies happy. Cheers!
