Xanadu in Annapolis

Last weekend, Xanadu, a striking Horizon 86, visited Annapolis. She was northbound for the upcoming Newport Boat Show and Rick Casali of Gilman Yachts, the local Horizon dealer, organized a pair of well-attended open houses aboard the boat.

Xanadu was built in Taiwan last year and her North Carolina-based owners took delivery at the 2007 Miami Boat Show. She features four guest cabins each with en suite heads and runs with three full-time crew. The boat is strikingly decorated and features extensive use of fine wood, marble, and granite. A professional decorator worked closely with the owners and the vibe above and below decks is bright and friendly, calling to mind her home waters of the Coastal Carolinas.

Labor Day Planner
Crisfield Hard Crab Derby and Fair

The Labor Day holiday weekend is upon us and there are a boatload of activities along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Throughout the week, floatline will review upcoming Labor Day special events, beginning today with one of the region' oldest and most unique Labor Day traditions: the Crisfield Hard Crab Derby and Fair.
Crab2

The idea of racing crabs for sport, and then building a massive event around the contests, might strike some as bizarre but what started 60 years ago as a funny idea has evolved into Crisfield's signature event. More than 10,000 people will be on the scene over the weekend. The activities include a boat docking contest, beauty contests, crab cook and picking contests, a parade, and plenty of fun for the family but the centerpiece are seven racing heats of 50 crabs each. Three-hundred fifty hard crabs are on the scene, each with its own cheering section. "You have never seen a more excited crowd than you will at this event," says Valerie Mason of the Crisfield Chamber of Commerce. Find a schedule and details at www.crisfieldchamber.com.

The Once and Future Naval Academy Fleet

The September issue of SpinSheet includes a closer look at the new batch of Navy 44s which will begin arriving in Annapolis next month. This is the fourth round of 44-foot training boats at the Academy since World War II. Mahogany Luders yawls came first and were eventually replaced by a fleet of fiberglass Luders yawls. In the late 1980s, the yawls were replaced by sturdy fiberglass sloops, the current "MKI" Navy 44s. These boats will be replaced over the next few years by a new fleet of 20 MKII 44s.

So... what happens to the old boats after they rotate away from Annapolis?

Several of the Academy’s older Luders yawls can be found in service around the world. According to the good folks at www.navypaxsail.com/Yawls, at least six of the wooden boats have been recently reported alive and well in homeports including San Diego, Washington state, and Gloucester, MA. The fiberglass yawls are spread even further afield in ports including Guam, Chile, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A pair of them, Alert and Vigilant, are actively sailed by the Navy Patuxent Sailing Club out of the Naval Air Station Patuxent River.

A pair of the 44 MKI sloops took leave of Annapolis before the first MKII sloop even hit the water. Lively and Vigilant were trucked to San Diego and spent the summer transiting up the west coast toward their new home with the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Washington. Rotating crews of midshipmen handled the deliveries north along the coast.
